thing down. >> they tried to shut him down. republicans from mitt romney and paul ryan to sarah palin, sean hannity, and rush limbaugh all urged akin to get out of the race after he said that. karl rove's american crossroads super pac pulled their money from him and while talking to donors, rove made this, his think being what akin was doing to the party crystal clear. he said we should sink todd akin. if he's found mysteriously murdered don't look for my whereabouts. that's karl. the national republican senate committee also pulled funds from akin's race. its chairman, john cornyn of texas, said last week, just last week, he had a simple answer on their involvement with akin going forward. he told "the hill" newspaper, quote, we're done. well, that was then, this is now. the deadline for akin to remove himself from the ballot has passed, and slowly republicans are rejoining the akin bandwagon, if you can call it that. the national republican senate committee, for example, said yesterday, as with every republican senate candidate, we hope todd akin wins in november, and we will contin
to be campaigning next week, obama 51. r romney 44. chuck, why don't you break those down for us? >> look at north carolina and nevada, the two places that economically are doing worse probably than any of the other battleground states. so if romney's economic message is going to play anywhere it's there. he should feel given how bad his last ten days were that the fact that he is only basically in the margin of error in those two states is good news for him if you will if you can look at it that way. notice that the president's job rating in both of those states, lower than his number. he sits at 47 in north carolina, 48 in nevada. then new hampshire is acting like the rest of the battlegrounds we've seen and that's got to be a little disappointing to romney since he spent so much time in new hampshire but frankly that one didn't surprise me. the surprising one to me was nevada that it was close. i expected there to be a little more of a gap there. >> suffolk university poll out late last night shows that the candidates are pretty close in virginia. neck and neck. obama 46. romney 44. chuck? >> t

think that coverage is fair. they think it will more critical when you boil it down of romney. bill: what is the difference between the pew poll and what we found there? >> well because the way the question was worded. if you ask people is it defending obama, attacking romney, i think people especially republicans say that is exactly right. that is what mary katherine is saying. if you ask them a matter of fairness is it fair coverage? for example, when you see mitt romney make the 47% comment or put clint eastwood on the stage and press makes a big deal out of it essentially you're feeding monster. you can't criticize the monster for eating. bill: there is that number again, isn't it, mary katherine. no, no the irony of what juan just said, 47% on that tape is matched by the polling number we put up. the larger point with that juan, i will let mary katherine weigh in on this, it going and going and feeds on itself without any breaks on it. >> let me give juan two examples of unfairness as i see them. first of all alberto gonzales heard a whole lot about firing lawyers at doj. on th

down to base turnout. this is going to come down to what is the ground game for mitt romney. what is the ground game for president barack obama and will their voters come out? having somebody day on a phone call as to how they're going to vote is irrelevant. the question is are they going to bring, are they going to come out, bring their family members out. are they going to bring their neighbors out? to the republicans stop all of this insessent whining about the polls. the real analysis from campaigns is going to be the first two weeks of early voting. they will get a sense of what the turnout is. go back to 2008. president obama's folks in 2008 actually looked in north carolina as a state they were losing. when they saw early turnout in 2008, they sent troops and money back into north carolina. that's how they won by 14,000 votes. how a poll says it's one thing, but it's what happens when they actually vote. that's what matters at the end of the day. >> but that early voting is why these polls do matter more. it's not just the only poll that counts on election day. early voting
